Reading is a part of my daily life, and I ask my students to make reading a part of theirs as well.  Throughout the year, we will discuss many pieces of literature together- books we read in class and independently.  Since I am always curious about what my students are reading, I thought you may want to know what I have been reading lately:


There's Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins- YA murder mystery that is pretty graphic all the way around
Know My Name by Chanel Miller- This is her moving and articulate memoir of her rape by a swimmer at Stanford in January of 2015 In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Hare
The Innovator's Mindset by George Couros- Ed reading
The Word is Murder- Fun book by Anthony Horowitz
And Then She Was Gone- British murder mystery- bizarro, but I really liked it!
Where the Crawdads Sing- once you get through the beginning, it is hard to put down.
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng- I enjoy her writing style and it was an interesting family dynamic
Less by Andrew Sean Greer- Winner of the Pulitzer Prize
Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz- excellent British murder mystery
White Rabbit by Caleb Roehrig- YA murder mystery- very good
Tiger Woods by Jeff Benedict and Armen Katayian- riveting bio of Tiger Woods.

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee- Abandoned

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman- translated from Swedish
Kitchens of the Great MidWest by J. Ryan Stradal
Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng (pronounced "ing")- the story of a dysfunctional family where the mother depends on her eldest daughter to fulfill all that she was not able to accomplish in her life and how this pressure affects her daughter and the rest of the family. So sad that parents do this. I enjoyed the book.
The Girl in the Spider's Web by David Lagercrantz- this is the 4th book of the Millennium Series by Stieg Larsson, translated from Swedish.  A fast read.
The Lighthouse by PD James- a delicious literary murder mystery
Tell Me Three Things by Julie Buxbaum- YA Lit
The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbach- started to read this one and realized I had already read it years ago- Ha!
The Girl I Used To Be by April Henry- YA Lit
Girl, Stolen by April Henry- YA Lit
Defending Jacob by William Landay
Girl Underwater by Claire Kells
The Accidental Empress by Allison Pataki
H is for Hawk by Helen McDonald- this book was a critical success, but I could not get into it and put it away.
Euphoria by Lily King- an interesting story about anthropologists in Papua New Guinea in the 1930s.  One of the NYT ten best books of the year.
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart- YA Lit
In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez
The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
Gray Mountain by John Grisham- easy airport read
What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty
All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, WWII novel that I am really enjoying.
Engaging Students with Poverty in Mind by Eric Jensen- education reading
The Rent Collector by Camron Wright. Great read
Devil in the Grove by Gilbert King- I am taking a break from this and intend to return. It was a bit too heavy for my mood.
The Circle by Dave Eggers- disturbing and entertaining.  I enjoyed it!
Teach Like a Champion by Doug Lemov- education reading
The Traitor's Wife by Allison Pataki - an interesting first book for Ms. Pataki.

13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher- YA   Mr. Asher is coming to visit in MARCH 2014!
The Orphan Master's Son by Adam Johnson -winner of 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction EXCELLENT!
An American Spy  by Olen Steinhauer: Clearly I have been in super- spy mode....

Me Before You- wonderful story of a caregiver and how the experience changes her life.
Finnish Lessons by Pasi Salberg- education reading
The Hare with Amber Eyes by Edmund de Waal- a very slow start to the story of a wealthy family's life and loss of  their art from 1870 to today.
The Secret Race by Tyler Hamilton- fascinating nonfiction piece about doping in the Tour de France. I recommend it to any athlete.
The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling)
And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini
Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
The Light Between Oceans by ML Stedman
Dark Places by Gillian Flynn
Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline
The Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling- I really liked this, and once I got into it, I could not put it down.
Killing Lincoln by Bill O'Reilly - my father really wanted me to  read this......and I enjoyed it
Looking for Alaska by John Green- YA
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
City of Thieves by David Benioff- compelling and surprisingly funny read about the siege of Leningrad; student/parent suggestion- thank you!
When She Woke by Hillary Jordan- entertaining
Russian Winter by Daphne Kalotay- an interesting novel about a subject with which I am not that familiar
The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman (abandoned- I just could not get into it.)
Okay for Now by Gary Schmidt - YA
Paper Towns by John Green- YA
The Fault in our Stars by John Green- YA
State of Wonder by Ann Patchett- very good
Preemie by Kasey Mathews- a wonderful memoir
In the Middle  by Nancie Atwell- education reading
Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese-   EXCELLENT! a top 5 for me
